Hydraulic winches are more robust in that they can winch all day without overheating. If your Jeep's engine is stalled this type of winch typically cannot be used. MileMarker is the leading manufacturer of these. They are most commonly connected to the power steering system, which must be beefed up in many cases. PS coolers are often added to this setup.
Warn, Ramsey and others make electric winches which are more convenient if you do not plan to be your club's winchmaster.
Hand winches are an attractive alternative due to greatly reduced weight and cost over hydraulic and electric. They are slower and, obviously, require more effort.
Manufacturers recommend 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle fully loaded. For most universal Jeeps an 8,000 LB winch will fit the bill although the 9,000 LB variety is most popular.

"The roller fairlead allows the cable to play out [and] in on rollers, top/bottom and sides) where as the hawse fairlead just lets the cable scrape on iron in/out. The roller is much easier on the cable and somewhat on the amount of load on the winch under strain."
