Recurrent Threads

Threads that pop up every so often that we would all be better off without:

Which is better off-road?

Stock jeeps are all very good and in fact better than almost ever other vehicle ever made.

Due to its short wheelbase some think the CJ5 is best. Others like the TJ's superior articulation. For the price of a new TJ, a modified YJ or CJ-7 will run circles around it. The light weight of a MB lets it scamper around a CJ-5 in many situations.

There are many situations where the longer wheelbase will let the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee or Wagoneer to triumph over the smaller Jeeps.

If you wanted to bring some firewood home the J series pickups would be the best choice.

Waving

Wave at all Jeeps. Saluting each other is an old and fine tradition.

Alternatives to waving include the nod (good if you are holding coffee), one finger lifted from the steering wheel (if your steering is wacky), a foot thrust out the side of a Jeep and, if you are close enough, a warm smile.

If you do not get a return wave the Jeeper was busy, had just stolen the Jeep and is not a true Jeeper, not looking, arguing with her boyfriend or oblivious to the inherent coolness of being a Jeeper. Retain your Zen like composure and get ready to wave to the next Jeeper.

Do not stress about this. There are no penalties.

Which CJ/YJ is better?

From 1976 on the CJ frames were fully boxed and sturdier (also less flexible). Earlier CJs can be boxed at certain key points to completely mitigate this. Mountain Off Road Engineering sells such a kit.

The '91 YJ starts the 4.0L EFI motor, which is well regarded. 1992 introduced a nice roll cage.
