Glossary

6 pt roll cage - better than 4 point roll cage

715 - Military gladiators, perhaps the most macho Jeep ever made.

AFAIK - As far as I know

AMC - Manufacturer number three, responsible for the YJ and wildly popular Cherokee models.

Articulation - total wheel travel comprised of droop (downward) and up-travel. More is good.

C-101 - Jeepster

CB Channel 4

Chrysler - Jeep manufacturer # 4

CJ - Civilian Jeep, from the 1940s through the 1980s. Models include the short wheelbase models with curved door openings CJ-2A, CJ-5, the midsize CJ-7, and the longer wheelbase CJ-6 and CJ-8 (Scrambler)

Crawl Ratio - The lowest total gear ratio a vehicle is capable of. i.e. low gear * xfer case reduction * axle ratio. For my ItyBityJeep this currently is 2.54 * 2.03 * 4.88 = 25 which is horrid. A 3.15 xfer case gear swap would raise this to 39 and a later truck transmission with a 6:54 first gear could bring this out to 100, a nice rock crawling ratio.

DIY - Do It Yourself

DJ - Delivery Jeep used by the US Postal Service

EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection is essentially a very precise carburetor. If it is closed loop it adjusts itself using exhaust and other sensors.

FC - Forward Control (cab over engine designs)

GAG - Green Advocacy Groups

GC - Grand Cherokee

Greenie - Gonzo environmentalist

HO - High Output

IRL - "In real life" as in - meeting a newsgroup friend for the first time IRL.

J10, J20, etc. = Full-size Jeep trucks. Muy Macho

JGC - (Jeep) Grand Cherokee

Kaiser - Manufacturer number two.

Killfile - while not actually a file on newer news readers this mechanism allows a user to configure his reader to ignore annoying users or threads, e.g. waving.

Mercedes - Jeep manufacturer #5

MJ - Comanche based pickup

NG - Usenet News Group (us)

PU - Willys style pickups

Roll Bar and Roll Cage - a roll cage encompasses the vehicles occupants. Simple roll bars can be made into cages with some welding and some tubes. Bolting a cage directly to the frame is by far the best solution to the rollover quandary.

SB - Small Block

SJ - Larger, older Jeeps (Wagoneer, etc.)

SUWA - idiots

SW - Willys style station wagon

Tailshaft Conversion - Many aftermarket companies sell kits to shorten the output shaft of New Process transfer cases. This allows for longer driveshafts and better angles required when lifting more than two or three inches or swapping in a longer engine or tranny.

TJ - The newest Wrangler model has been produced since 1997. It is generally thought to be the best stock short wheelbase Jeep ever made.

Tree Hugger - See greenie

Universal Jeep - Any of the pre-YJ short wheelbase Jeeps, typically open top.

Willys - The first manufacturer of "Jeeps".

WJ - Second generation of Grand Cherokee, 1999 and later

XJ - Cherokee

YJ - First generation Wrangler (although some CJs came with a "Wrangler" package). This replaced the venerable CJ and was produced from 1987 to 1995. 1991 introduced EFI and a stronger motor, the 4.0. Stock the YJ provides a more pleasant on-road drive than the CJ but at the expense of off-road prowess. Derisively referred to as "Yuppie Jeep", it is a worthy vehicle and can be built as strong as any of the others. Rectangular headlights make this Jeep easy to identify.

ZJ - first generation of Grand Cherokee
